Emergency dentistry is the treatment of oral conditions that require immediate attention. Emergency dentistry is usually necessary when your teeth have suffered some sort of severe physical trauma, like getting knocked out or significantly cracked, but it can be necessary in other situations as well, such as a severely infected tooth or injuries to your mouth tissue.
Seeking emergency care from the team at Rene Horvilleur, DDS, within 30 minutes of your injury could mean the difference between saving or losing your tooth.
A number of situations could lead to the need for emergency dentistry, such as an automobile accident, a sports injury, or simply biting down on something improperly. Some particular conditions that are considered dental emergencies include:
Some situations, like a minor fracture or a slightly chipped tooth, don’t necessarily require emergency treatment, but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. Call the team at Rene Horvilleur, DDS, immediately if you think you might be suffering from a dental emergency.
If you act quickly, you’re more likely to save your damaged tooth. Whatever your condition, rinse your mouth and call Rene Horvilleur, DDS, for an emergency appointment.
If your tooth has been knocked entirely out of its socket, clean the inside of your mouth with warm water, and rinse the knocked-out tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part) as you rinse it and be sure to avoid touching the roots.
If you can, try to place the tooth back in its socket and bite down softly on a piece of wet gauze or a moistened tea bag. Be careful to not swallow the tooth.
If you can’t get your tooth back into the empty socket, keep it in a glass of milk or saliva until you get to the dentist. This will help to prevent the roots from drying out.
